Molded plastic, wheeled waste bin in Berkshire, England

Waste management in Kathmandu (Nepal)

Waste management is the collection, transport, processing, recycling or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. Waste management is also carried out to recover resources from it. Waste management can involve solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, with different methods and fields of expertise for each.

Waste management practices differ for developed and developing nations, for urban and rural areas, and for residential and industrial producers. Management for non-hazardous waste residential and institutional waste in metropolitan

areas is usually the responsibility of local government authorities, while management for non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste is usually the responsibility of the generator.

Integrated waste management using LCA (life cycle analysis) attempts to offer the most benign options for waste management. For mixed MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) a number of broad studies have indicated that waste administration, then source separation and collection followed by reuse and recycling of the non-organic fraction and energy and compost…

Waste generation and waste management

The starting point for the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from solid waste disposal, biological treatment and incineration and open burning of solid waste is the compilation of activity data on waste generation, composition and management.

Solid waste generation is the common basis for activity data to estimate emissions from solid waste disposal, biological treatment, and incineration and open burning of waste. Solid waste generation rates and composition vary depending on the economic situation, industrial structure, waste management regulations and life style. The availability and quality of data on solid waste generation as well as subsequent treatment also vary significantly from country to country.

Solid waste is generated from households, offices, shops, markets, restaurants, public institutions, industrial installations, water works and sewage facilities, construction and demolition sites, and agricultural activities. It

is good practice to account for all types of solid waste when estimating waste-related emissions in the greenhouse gas inventory.

Solid waste management practices include: collection, recycling, solid waste disposal on land, biological and other treatments as well as incineration and open burning of waste. Recycling (material recovery) activities will affect the amounts of waste entering into other management and treatment systems.

Waste Disposal methods

Landfill

Disposing of waste in a landfill involves burying the waste, and this remains a common practice in most countries. Modern landfill include methods to contain leachate such as clay or plastic lining material. Deposited waste is normally compacted to increase its density and stability, and covered to prevent attracting vermin (such as mice or rats). Many landfills also have landfill gas extraction systems installed to extract the landfill gas. Gas is pumped out of the landfill using perforated pipes and flared off or…

Waste management practices differ for developed and developing nations, for urban and rural areas, and for residential and industrial producers. Management for non-hazardous residential and institutional waste in metropolitan areas is usually the responsibility of local government authorities, while management for non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste is usually the responsibility of the generator.

Proper sewage disposal is getting rid sewage in the most environmentally and human friendly way as possible whilst improper sewage disposal is the opposite. It causes the wide spread of many diseases and poses as a health problem for human beings. Disease-causing bacteria can contaminate drinking water supplies and be transported by flies, rodents and dogs. Proper sewage disposal methods are essential to control disease-causing bacteria, to remove and stabilize organic

material, avoid the contamination of drinking water and reduce unpleasant odors and unsightly appearance.

Debris after a disaster may include waste soils and sediments, vegetation (trees, limbs, shrubs), municipal solid waste (common household garbage, personal belongings), construction and demolition debris (in some instances, entire residential structures and all their contents), vehicles (cars, trucks, boats), food waste, so-called white goods (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners), and household hazardous waste (cleaning agents, pesticides, pool chemicals). Each type of waste may contain or be contaminated with certain toxic or hazardous constituents. In the short term, removal of debris is necessary to facilitate the recovery of a geographic area. In the long term, the methods by which these wastes are to be managed require proper consideration to ensure that their management will not pose future threats to human health or the environment.

In the aftermath of a…

Concerns with Waste Management and Governments Plans to Help

ENGR 120

10-06-07

Whether in our lifetime or thousands of years from now, the world will one day run out of empty space to store societies waste. Our globe only has a set amount of available space to set aside for the disposal of our waste. Since this is the case, it is not only our government’s problem but the problem of all human beings. In collaboration with our legislature, citizens can help in the safe and proper disposal of trash.

Lynn Landers nailed the problem on the head when he said, “It’s as if Detroit built cars, but the government wouldn’t build any roads or pass any traffic laws. That’s the current state of waste management in the United States – no federal infrastructure and no federal standards. No wonder recycling can’t “compete” with waste disposal.” Without a governmental program enacted nation wide, our country will eventually suffer from the pollutants and toxins being released from landfills.

Our nation’s policy on waste management is the “free market” at its worst.

According to Landers, recycling efforts face three large problems in the US: no effective federal plan, foreign waste imports and domestic waste exports, and over-population. In our country right now, no plan is in effect to help benefit society by recycling. In 1976 congress passed the Solid Waste Disposal Act, but with no state support and no action from the EPA the plan died off. According to Biocycle Magazine, the US has imported nearly 48 million tons more than it has exported since 1997. With that trend, in 30 years we will have accumulated 144 million tons of waste from outside of our own country. The other problem with waste management deals with the increasing population of the United States. At an annual growth of 3 million people, waste management programs are forced to face the problem of more people with more trash.

In our state, Ascension parish, Calcasieu parish…
